In late fall of 2003, the Peel Crisis Capacity
Sub-Committee, under the auspices of the Peel Planning Group,
launched a project to develop a crisis response system that would
have the capacity to serve individuals with a developmental
disability, including those with a dual diagnosis, who are in crisis
and require time-limited transitional supports in Peel Region.
The project was initiated by the Peel Planning
Group in response to concerns raised by consumers, families and
service providers that there was insufficient crisis response
support available to people with developmental disabilities
(including Dual Diagnosis) in Peel Region.
Funding for the original project was provided
by the Ministry of Community and Social Services and later by the
Ministry of Health. The Sub-Committee, along with the consultants,
worked throughout 2004 to determine the recommended model for the
crisis response system and to develop an implementation plan.
Feedback was sought from family members and consumers throughout the
development of the model.
The Peel Crisis Capacity Network was formally
launched on April 25, 2005. In the months following its launch,
there were requests and opportunities to lower the PCCN’s age of
eligibility so that it could also support latency-aged youth. The
PCCN was joined by additional children’s organizations in Peel who
identified with the goals and opportunities of the Network. In
October 2006, the PCCN lowered its age of eligibility, and currently
supports children 11 years of age and older.
